That you can eliminate anywhere from 6 to 25 lbs. of fat from your diet every year just by switching to skim milk. The recommendations for every adult is that we drink the equivalent of 3 cups of milk every day. One pound of butter/margarine has 352 grams of fat. If you drink 3 cups of milk each day, in one year you will consume the equivalent of the following amounts of extra butter:
Skim milk |
less than 1 lb. |
1% milk |
6.2 lbs. |
2% milk |
15.5 lbs. |
Whole milk |
24.8 lbs. |
Children up to the age of two NEED at least 2% of whole milk. Over the age of two, skim milk is great. If you do not currently drink skim milk, try it for two weeks. If at the end of two weeks you still think it is blue water go back to what you drank before. (At least you will have honestly tried.)
Research that has just come out from the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, indicates that being overweight doesn
=t necessarily mean a person=s health risk has to be higher. The determining factor is EXERCISE. The study found that those who exercise whether normal, under, or overweight, have about the same health risks. Normal or underweight people that do not exercise have three times the health risks of someone that is overweight and does exercise. Just because you=re thin does not mean you are healthy, and just because you=re overweight doesn=t mean you are doomed. Exercise! The American Heart Association recently (July 1, 1997) came out with updated exercise guidelines that should be promoted by physicians
Aas fervently as they do smoke cessation and controlling blood cholesterol levels.@ The guidelines strongly suggest that all adults should aerobically exercise at least four days a week for at least 30 to 60 continuous minutes. Resistive weight exercises using free weights (or the circuit system we have here at the college) should be done 2-3 days per week.A simple means of measuring whether you are exercising aerobically or not: As you begin to exercise pay attention to your breathing rate. As soon as you can hear yourself breathing you are probably at the low end of your aerobic training zone (about 60% of maximum heart rate). When you get to a point that you can no longer talk to someone because you
=re breathing too hard, you are probably at the upper end of the aerobic scale (about 90%).Go out and have an enjoyable exercise experience!
