Some Values of Interest
In a recent chat with Dr. Mark Gehmlich concerning blood cholesterol, he informed me that the Health Center had blood cholesterol values of students who had come in for a visit during the last year and a half, usually due to an illness, where a blood sample was taken. Out of curiosity, I asked him if he could pull those records for us to take a look at and get a sort of sampling of the total cholesterol values of our Ricks College students. We then thought it would be interesting to also look at the values of faculty and staff who attended the most recent Ricks College Health Fair (Nov. 99) and had their blood cholesterol checked. Summary results of these data are presented below.
Ricks College students
Total samples: 530
Total Blood Cholesterol Values |
|||
| Total Blood Cholesterol Level | < 200 mg/dl | 200 220 mg/dl | > 220 mg/dl |
| Number of Students Percent of Group |
452 (85%) |
36 (7%) |
42 (8%) |
Notes:
- Most blood draws were non-fasting
- Gender of subjects unknown at the time of this article
Ricks College Faculty and Staff
Total Samples: 90
Total Blood Cholesterol Values |
|||
| Total Blood Cholesterol Level | < 200 mg/dl | 200 220 mg/dl | > 220 mg/dl |
| Number of Faculty/Staff Percent of Group |
28 (31%) |
23 (6%) |
39 (43%) |
Notes:
- Most blood draws were fasting samples
- Gender of subjects unknown at the time of this article
- There may have been a few college age students included in the Health Fair samples
- Individuals who had their blood tested may have chosen to do so because of past tests where the results produced high levels
While these test results may be bias and are not representative of a true sampling, the difference between groups makes these values of some interest.
