Chin 101 Beginning Mandarin I (4 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor, International Studies Major and may fulfill the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • Goals: Develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese


Chin 102 Beginning Mandarin II (4 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor, International Studies Major and may fulfill the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • Continuation of Chin 101 in developing four skills.
  • Prerequisite: Chin 101 with a grade of "C" or better, three years high school Chinese or consent of instructor.

Chin 201 Intermediate Mandarin I (4 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor, International Studies Major and may fulfill the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • Continue developing four skills in producing output at discourse level
  • Prerequisite: Chin 102 with a grade of "C" or better or consent of instructor.

Chin 202 Intermediate Mandarin II (4 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor,International Studies Major and may fulfill the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • Continue developing four skills in producing output at discourse level
  • Prerequisite: Chin 201 with a grade of "C" or better or consent of instructor.


Chin 301 Advanced Mandarin I (3 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor, International Studies Major and may fulfill the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • Focus on developing oral fluency at paragraph level, discourse grammar skill, advanced reading and writing skills, and on acquiring basic shumianyu 书面语
  • Introduce different genres such as fiction, prose, essay, TV drama, and public speech/stories
  • Prerequisite: Chin 202 with a grade of "C" or better or consent of instructor

Chin 302 Advanced Mandarin II (3 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor,International Studies Major and may fulfill the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • Continue developing oral fluency at paragraph level, discourse grammar skill, advanced reading and writing skills and on acquiring basic shumianyu 书面语
  • Focus on media language and genre such as newspapers, news reports, etc.
  • Prerequisite: Chin 202 with a grade of "C" or better or consent of instructor.

Chin 345 Chinese Culture (3 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor, International Studies major, and may meet the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • An introduction to Chinese culture, ancient and modern. All readings and instruction in English.
  • Prerequisite: English 111


Chin 347 Chinese Literature Translation (3 credits, online)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Minor, International Studies Major,and may meet the requirements of other majors or minors or clusters (Check with your home department)
  • A survey course in Chinese literature. Covers various periods and genres. All readings and instruction in English.
  • Prerequisite: English 111

Chin 377 Chinese Teaching Methods (3 credits)

  • Fulfill the requirements of Chinese Education Minor
  • Focus on learning Chinese teaching skills and theories of foreign language acquisition
  • Prerequisites: Chinese 302 with a grade of "C" or better. Chinese Education minor must have completed or be near completing 20 credit hours in a foreign language.


Chin 490 Independent Study (vary 1-4 credits)

  • Independent projects monitored through periodic conferences with and assessments by instructor
  • Prerequisite: Approved by instructor
