I don’t have a horrible background or upbringing. Should I still apply for the Program?

A disadvantage background means that an applicant is overcoming obstacles in gaining an education at BYU-Idaho, and does not always indicate an abusive or threatening background. If a student fits under two or three of the qualifications, he or she is more than welcome to apply.

How much financial assistance will I receive?

The amount of financial assistance varies from student to student. Each Heber J. Grant student is reviewed and evaluated on an individual basis by the Student Financial Aid office and given the maximum amount of consideration possible based on the student’s overall qualifications. Please contact your personal financial aid advisor www.byui.edu/financialaid/contacts.htm for questions about your financial aid award.

*Please note that there is no guaranteed minimum award.

When will I receive my financial assistance?

An individual financial aid evaluation for each student is done by the Student Financial Aid office through the University Scholarship and Grant Application. Please contact your personal financial aid advisor financial aid advisor www.byui.edu/financialaid/contacts.htm for questions about your financial aid award.

I received a grant and/or scholarship award from the university, but nothing that says it’s from the Heber J. Grant Program. When will I receive the Heber J. Grant award?

Financial aid awards given from the university do not break down where each dollar amount comes from. For ease of processing for the Student Financial Aid office and for the student, awards are given in lump sum either as a scholarship and/or as a grant. If you have received an award from the university and been accepted to the Heber J. Grant Program, then your additional financial aid consideration has already been given to you and is included in that award. Please contact your personal financial aid advisor www.byui.edu/financialaid/contacts.htm if you have additional questions about your financial aid award.

Does the Heber J. Grant Program offer a scholarship?

No. Originally, the Heber J. Grant Program offered a set scholarship amount to all students accepted to the Program. However, the needs of our students often exceeded the scholarship amount. Now, each Heber J. Grant student is reviewed and evaluated on an individual basis by the Student Financial Aid office and given the maximum amount of consideration possible for financial resources available to BYU – Idaho students. Please see the Student Financial Aid office for additional information and necessary applications.

*If you have questions about a prior scholarship amount promised to you before March 2010 by the Heber J. Grant Program, please contact our office.

No. The Heber J. Grant Program is specific to BYU-Idaho only.

Can the Heber J. Grant Program act as a sponsor for an international student?

No. But, if the student is accepted to the Program, financial help may be available once he or she is an attending BYU-Idaho student.

Do I need to reapply for the Heber J. Grant Program?

No. Once you have applied to the Heber J. Grant Program, you never need to reapply because your background does not change. Students do, however, need to fill out the FAFSA and the University Scholarship and Grant Application to receive on-going financial assistance from the university. See www.byui.edu/financialaid for more information on those applications and processes.

What if I can’t take the College Success Course my first semester at school?

A student signs up to receive a mentor through the Heber J. Grant Program application process.

What can I do to volunteer and give back to the Program?

The best way to give back is to get involved in the community or on campus. A student can sign up to serve as a Heber J. Grant mentor after attending BYU-Idaho for two semesters or can get involved in other service opportunities. Please visit www.byui.edu/getinvolved for more information on HJG mentoring and other campus resources.
