W Grades (withdrawal) at BYU-Idaho
- W grades are placed on your academic record (transcript) if you drop a class anytime after the 22nd day in a semester (or after the 15th day in a block) up until the final drop deadline, for any reason.
- W grades are NOT calculated into your grade point average (GPA).
- W grades remain on your transcript even if you re-take the class at a later date.
- W grades are considered non-progress grades and are calculated into the 75% progress requirement. (See explanation below.)
- If you are receiving Federal Financial Aid, you must check with that office to determine how W grades affect your eligibility.
75% Satisfactory Academic Progress
The 75% satisfactory progress rule requires students to complete at least 75% of their credits for each semester of registration. F, W (withdrawal), and UW (unofficial withdrawal) grades are considered non-progress grades.
For example, if a student registers for 16 credits and later drops 4 credits, the student's academic progress is 75% (12 divided by 16 = 75). However, if a student drops or fails a total of 5 credits, academic progress drops to 69% (11 divided by 16 = 69). Since 69% is lower than 75%, the student would be placed on academic warning when final grades were processed for that semester or placed on academic probation if already on academic warning.
