On-Campus Housing Internet connections

     Students who live in the on-campus apartments and residence halls (Chapman, Perkins, Kerr, Barnes, Ricks, Lamprecht, Biddulph, and University Village) and have a "supportable" computer can connect to the BYU-Idaho network for internet access at no extra cost.

     A "supportable" computer is one that runs Windows XP (Pro or Home), Windows Vista, Mac OS 8.6 or higher, Windows 7 or Linux and has the needed network card as described below.

     Lamprecht, University Village, and Biddulph have ethernet (network) connections.  Student computers must have a NIC (Network Interface Card), a.k. a. ethernet card.  In Lamprecht and University Village, the student must supply their own ethernet (network) cable.  In Biddulph the student must use the gray ethernet (network) cable provided.      Perkins, Kerr, Barnes, Ricks, and Chapman Halls have wireless Internet.  Computers must be equipped with an AG or ABG wireless card in order to use the wireless Internet.  Quality wireless Internet cards are emphasized (about $60 - $70) and can be purchased at most electronic stores, including the BYU-Idaho Bookstore.  Also, it is recommended that the computer have Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Mac OS 10.2 or higher, or Linux.

       A note on wireless adapters(ethernet cards): the cheaper the card, the cheaper the experience.  A cheap $20 card will give an unreliable, intermittent, and poor wireless experience.  A more expensive card will generally provide a stronger signal and consistent experience.
