Department of Horticulture

Benjamin Romney, Department Chair
Byron John, Jerry Toll, Reese Nelson, Forest Barnes, Greenhouse Manager
Departmental Office (208) 356-2018

The Department of Horticulture prepares students for expanding career opportunities. Graduates find immediate employment with nurseries, garden centers, florist shops, landscape contractors, lawn service companies, interiorscape companies, greenhouses, golf courses, parks and horticulture supply companies. Demand for graduates is strong and most students can choose from several job offers.

Students who continue on for Bachelorís and more advanced degrees find opportunities in horticulture teaching, research, extension education, career corporations, and government service.

The ultimate goal of students entering Horticulture Management programs should be management and/or business ownership.

The Department is a recognized leader in horticulture education having an excellent faculty and facilities, including five greenhouses, laboratories, arboretum, and demonstration gardens. Courses which develop skills in home gardening and landscape beautification are available to the general student body.

Degrees Offered:

1. Associate in Horticulture Management This program offers 2 options of emphasis, Landscape Design or Production. These emphases prepare students for careers in retail nursery sales, greenhouse operations, production, landscape design, landscape installation, landscape maintenance and golf course and park maintenance.

2. Associate in Floral Design Management The Floral Design Management program prepares students for employment in the retail florist, interior landscape and retail greenhouse industry. Upon graduation students are qualified floral designers and have training leading to flower shop management. Classes transfer for university credit, but may not fulfill all General Education requirements.

3. BS in Horticulture Management This program carries the student beyond the two year curriculum into advanced study and preparation for private and corporate horticulture industries. Three areas of Major emphasis are offered, including: Landscape Design and Construction, Floral Design, and Plant Production. A Minor emphasis is required for the completion of the degree. A minor in Business is highly recommended.

Students must complete 45 semester hours specializing in horticulture and related subjects, 50 credits of general education requirements, and 25 semester credits in an area of minor study unrelated to Horticulture to further enhance the degree, for a total of 120 credits, including 40 credits of upper division courses (300 or higher).

Entrance Requirement

The Floral Design and Horticulture Management programs have enrollment limitations. Students who are admitted to BYU-Idaho and indicate intention to major in these majors will automatically be considered based upon: scholastic record (high school/ college transcript), ACT scores, relevant course work, and date of application. A grade point average of 2.5 must be maintained in order to continue in this major.
