TOPICS: Application of critical theory to literary analysis; literary research; MLA documentation; the writing process.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Explore critical theories that inform the ways experienced readers respond to literature.
  2. Explicate, analyze, and evaluate works of literature using various critical approaches and integrating relevant secondary sources.
  3. Evaluate traditional, technical, and electronic research sources for their accuracy, comprehensiveness, and usefulness.
  4. Accurately summarize source information and document it according to MLA guidelines.
  5. Apply elements of effective writing, such as adapting to audience and purpose; focusing, organizing, and developing ideas; achieving coherence; and editing.
REQUIREMENTS: 30 pages of edited and documented prose.
PREREQUISITES: Completion of English 111 or 111C, English 251, and at least 22 credit hours or sophomore standing.
