CATALOG DESCRIPTION: A beginning course in residential space planning. Foundational concepts include programming, concept development, problem solving, space planning and design communication. Students will be introduced to calculations and the specification of furniture, furnishings, lighting, materials and finishes.

Students will be introduced to calculations and the specification of furniture, furnishings, lighting, materials and finishes.
TOPICS: Creativity; Calculations: Carpet, Vinyl, Ceramic Tile, Wallpaper, Drapery, Blinds and Shades;
Schedules and Project Documents; Drafting Basics; Furniture Arranging; Furniture Specification;
Residential Space Planning; Environmental Concerns and Codes; Interior Environmental Control and Support Systems.

OBJECTIVES: 1. To introduce and provide calculation exercises for floor coverings, wall coverings and window coverings.
2. To introduce the student to programming, conceptualizing, problem solving, space planning and furniture layout.
3. To introduce the student to specification of furniture, lighting, interior finishes and supporting schedules.
4. To cultivate an understanding of interior systems and finish materials.
5. To provide opportunities for group interaction through creativity exercises and small studio assignments.
6. To promote professional presentation skills in oral, written and graphic formats.
