CATALOG DESCRIPTION: 
Intended for those majoring or minoring in mathematics education. Topics are chosen from financial mathematics, linear programming, decision theory, discrete and continuous modeling. Emphasis will be placed on learning (and learning to teach) problem solving in real world contexts. (Fall) 
DESCRIPTION: 
This course is intended to teach prospective mathematics educators problem solving techniques and give them confidence in working with real world applications of mathematics. It will also expose students to a wide range of areas of mathematics which will give them the tools to enrich the standard secondary school curriculum. Topics will be chosen from financial mathematics, linear programming, decision theory, discrete and continuous modeling. 
TOPICS: 
Mortgages and other types of loans, annuities, market options and market models, linear programming, voting and apportionment theory, competitive and cooperative strategies, ecological models, modeling motion. 
OBJECTIVES: 
This course is intended to teach prospective mathematics educators problem solving techniques and give them confidence in working with real world applications of mathematics. It will also expose students to a wide range of areas of mathematics which will give them the tools to enrich the standard secondary school curriculum. This breadth will also allow students to create extracurricular activities for their secondary school students such as math clubs and scholastic competitions. 
REQUIREMENTS: 
There will be regular homework assignments and tests. In addition students will give in class presentations and work collaboratively on significant application problems. They will write up the results of their collaborative work in lab report or research paper formats.
