|CATALOG DESCRIPTION:||Math 490 must be taken the semester before student teaching.
This course will introduce students to various ways of teaching mathematics at the secondary education level. Ways to implement the NCTM Standards into the classroom and relating current mathematics education research to the classroom. The student will have some teaching opportunities.
|DESCRIPTION:||This course will require the students to put together resource materials and think through how to present and explain concepts from junior and senior high school math classes. Students will study the NCTM Standards and create lesson plans and activities that implement the standards. Various pedagogical approaches to presenting mathematics will be explored. Students will be exposed to current mathematical education research and how it improves their classroom dynamic. Students will gain teaching experience by giving class presentations, participating in peer tutoring and giving presentations in Math 101, 110, 111 and 112 classes.|
|TOPICS:||A variety of pedagogical approaches to presenting mathematical concepts such as Transmission, Discovery, Apprenticeship, using group dynamics and catalytic teaching.
The NCTM Standards.
Ways of preparing a math lesson.
Various ways of assessing mathematical content.
Teaching experience in Math classes.
|OBJECTIVES:||The preservice teacher will become aware of the NCTM Standards.
The preservice teacher will know how to implement the Standards into their future classroom.
The preservice teacher will konw various teaching perspectives as to teaching math.
The preservice teacher will know multiple ways of assessing their students.
The preservice teacher will have practical experience in teaching math classes.
|REQUIREMENTS:||The preservice teacher will give oral and written presentations focused on the multiple approaches to teaching math.
The preservice teacher will search the literature in Math Education Research.
The preservice teacher will create lesson plans for teaching a math class.
The preservice teacher will carry out their plans by teaching some math classes.
