CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Sound Alliance is the premier jazz ensemble at BYU–Idaho. It is auditioned but open to all BYU-Idaho students (music majors and non-majors). The ensemble provides an opportunity for students to practice and cultivate jazz with other students at a similar skill level. It provides challenge, learning, and growth. The course includes a full educational curriculum, works hard, performs regularly, tours and attends festivals when possible.

TOPICS: Jazz styles, big band performance practices, advanced improvisation, articulation, sound concepts, listening skills, ensemble rehearsal techniques, who’s who, listening skills, transcription, historic considerations, practice habits, communication, and other jazz fundamentals
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of Sound Alliance is to create an environment where students can develop skills and character traits such as spirituality, discipline, intellect, commitment, honesty, service, loyalty, creativity, and devotion. Secondary objectives include: the cultivation of a significant American art form, the development students to professional competency in music, and the teaching of jazz components requisite to student needs.
REQUIREMENTS: Students must attend all rehearsals and performances. In addition, students must improve individually. Means for this improvement are provided at the onset of the course. Those desiring solos must earn the opportunity by transcribing, taking the improvisation classes, writing out a sample solo, or other tasks recommended by the director.

OTHER: It is highly recommended that all students interested in jazz take Music 146 A & B: Jazz Improvisation 1 and 2.
