CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Overview of great opera and art song vocal literature throughout music history, with emphasis on material for use in vocal development and progression.
DESCRIPTION: Overview of great opera and art song vocal literature throughout music history, with emphasis on material for use in vocal development and progression.
TOPICS: Great vocal literature of the western world, peformance practice considerations, and teaching merits of particular pieces.
OBJECTIVES: Students will become familiar with the great vocal repertoire and composers of the western world, learn salient applicable elements of performance practice, and develop some skill in recognizing and gauging the vocal demands teaching merits inherent in selected pieces. They will examine in some detail selected representative pieces of the vocal repertoire. Students will develop a list of future teaching pieces.
REQUIREMENTS: Written projects and several tests.
PREREQUISITES: Vocal music major status, completion of or concurrent registration in Music Theory 3.
OTHER: This course is required of vocal music majors in the integrated music track, but is not required of vocal music education majors. It is recommended that students taking this class take Music 411, Vocal Pedagogy, first.
