GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of manual and pedal technique, elementary repertoire, elementary registration, and hymn playing.
DESCRIPTION: This one semester course teaches the fundamentals of organ playing in a group setting. The students will play at least some of each assignment before the entire class.
TOPICS: The course will cover the basic manual and pedal techniques, the essentials of organ registrations (use of stops), as well as hymn playing for the congregation and playing prelude and postlude music for the Sacrament Meeting.
OBJECTIVES: This class will teach the essential skills necessary to be an effective ward organist. During the semester most organists will have learned ten hymns and about six organ solos that are appropriate for a prelude or postlude. The difficulty of the hymns and the solos may vary depending on the level of piano skills of the various students in the class.
REQUIREMENTS: It is necessary for the students to practice about four hours weekly on the organ. Attendance at class is required.
PREREQUISITES: Ability to play hymns of average difficulty on the piano.
