CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Members of the ensemble are grouped into quartets as well as larger, choir-like, groupings. Music specifically written or transcribed for this ensemble type includes classical and jazz genres. Students are given information to help them become better saxophonists individually and as an ensemble. The group is non-auditioned and open to any saxophonist who wishes to participate.
DESCRIPTION: The Saxophone Ensemble meets twice per week for one hour each time. Members of the ensemble are grouped into quartets as well as larger, choir-like, groupings. Music specifically written or transcribed for this ensemble type includes classical and jazz genres. Students are given information to help them become better saxophonists individual and as an ensemble. The Saxopone Ensemble performs on the Music Departament's "Woodwind Chamber Night" concert, in Saxophone Masterclass, and on other occasions as opportunity permits (Christmas Tree Lane in the Manwaring Center). The group is non-auditioned and open to any saxophonist who wishes to participate.
TOPICS: Topics depend on the needs of the group. They may include such things as:
Classical performance styles and techniques
Jazz performance styles and techniques
Tone production
Intonation
Articulation
Who to listen to
Practice habits
Reed care and adjustment
Performance etiquette
OBJECTIVES: 1. Provide an opportunity for students, music majors and non-majors to participate in music (thus the non-auditioned environment)
2. Offer lesson-type information and coaching to students who do not have time and/or funds for private lessons or when there are more saxophone students than available private lesson space with faculty.
3. Offer the invaluable musical independence developed through chamber music participation.
REQUIREMENTS: Attendance: all students must attend regularly for the success of the group
30 minutes of individual practice per day

PREREQUISITES: Play the saxophone at any level and a desire to keep playing
OTHER: This is a fun class!
