Must be taken concurrently with Fundamentals of Physics PH 101.
|DESCRIPTION:||This laboratory is designed to provide students with experience in making and analyzing measurements of the physical environment at a fundamental-level.|
|TOPICS:||Measurements and instruments, relationships and graphing, scalars and vectors, describing and explaining motion, motions in space, gravity, mass-volume-density, momentum, energy, structure and space of matter, thermal and available energy, relativity, atomic spectra, elasticity and oscillations, waves, light, electricity, and the atom.|
|OBJECTIVES:||Ph 101L introduces students to the Galilean Scientific Method to enhance to their conceptual understanding in physics. Students will develop a heuristic approach and understanding of how and why measurements sustain and substantiate theories, laws, and principles in Physics. An important caveat is understanding the limitations of the measurement process.|
|REQUIREMENTS:||PH 101 must be taken concurrently with PH 101 (Fundamentals of Physics). All students must have their own laboratory manual. Scientific calculators (graphing-calculators are not required)will be utilized and the student must procure their own. Laboratory procedures, assisgnments, examinations are required by all faculty. Some faculty may in addition require attendance, participation, projects, group-working, or other forms of assessment.|
|PREREQUISITES:||Concurrent Registration: Ph 101
Competency with basic mathematical operations is assumed.
|EFFECTIVE DATE:||August 2003|
