CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course provides a broad review of nursing practice and care of the medical-surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, and obstetrical clients. It is taught with lecture, discussion of texts, articles, computer simulations, role play, and case histories. Emphasis is on student participation and active involvement with the learning process.

TOPICS:
OBJECTIVES: Nurse Agency (Stewardship, laws and opposites, caring relationships, human functionality, professionalism and knowledge, incorporating critical thinking, the health continuum, environment, patient agency, and the nursing process)

1. Show progress in personal and professional stewardship in rendering care to patients through an understanding of diagnostic tests, nutrtion, pharmacology, and technical skills.

2. Demonstrate ways of establishing care relationships and supporting emotional safety through the communication of empathy, acceptance, and congruence.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of ways to respect patient rights and confidentiality while providing appropriate nursing care.

4. Use critical thinking in applying knowledge and understanding of disease processes and all aspects of the nursing process to patient care secenarios.
