CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Astronomy is the study of the heavens and the Earth as a planet. Introduces students to the wonders of the heavens. Occasional use is made of the planetarium and observatory.
DESCRIPTION: Astronomy is the study of the heavens and the Earth as a planet. Introduces students to the wonders of the heavens. Occasional use is made of the planetarium and observatory.
TOPICS: Observing the stars, planets, sun and Moon,the history and philosophy of astronomy, modern deep space astronomy (stars, their life history, nebulae, galaxies)and planetary astronomy.
OBJECTIVES: Recognize the brightest stars and constellations in the night sky. List/describe the strengths, limitations, philosphy and historical development of the scientific method. Use of vocabulary/concepts of modern astronomy, allowing to comfortably converse intellectually about astronomy.
