PHYS INQUIRY
CLASS CODE: PH 410 CREDITS:  3
DIVISION: PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT: PHYSICS
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This hands-on course covers selected topics in physics with emphasis on depth-of-understanding and developing skills essential to the scientific process. These skills in include observation, interpretation, reasoning, generalizing predicting, questioning and related communication skills. It provides an experience in education by inquiry. This experience provides a background for teaching as a process of inquiry.
DESCRIPTION:
TOPICS: Topics will be selected by selecting several of the following modules: Properties of Matter, Heat and Temperature, Light and Color, Magnets, Astronomy by Sight, Electric Circuits, Electromagnets, Light and Optics, and Kinematics.
OBJECTIVES: Emphasis is placed on depth of understanding rather than breadth. PH 410 gives students a chance to make personalized observations of actual phenomena in guided exploration or inquiry. It gives them the opportunity to learn the detailed reasoning needed to generalize their results. We seek to improve skills in following written instructions, observation, interpretation, reasoning, predicting, and communicating their understanding. We expect students to become more skilled at asking questions that can drive their own learning. This experience as a student by inquiry will be a model that they can follow for teaching by inquiry for those interested in teaching.
REQUIREMENTS: Junior level standing or permission of the instructor. Previous experience in physics is helpful, but not required. This course has no math prerequisite. Students are required to complete homework assignments, several papers, and exams.
PREREQUISITES: Junior level standing or permission of the instructor.
