CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Examination of the science behind many of society's problems, including global warming, nuclear energy and waste, nuclear proliferation, energy sources and policy, exploration of the universe, and utilization of natural resources.
DESCRIPTION: Examination of the science behind many of society's problems, including global warming, nuclear energy and waste, nuclear proliferation, energy sources and policy, exploration of the universe, and utilization of resources.
TOPICS: Global warming, environmental pollution, nuclear energy,nuclear waste, nuclear proliferation, energy sources and policy, exploration of the Solar System, contamination of other worlds by earth life, SETI, utilization of resources.
OBJECTIVES: Familiarize students with several societal problems that involve scientific processes. Students should gain an appreciation for the complexities of the issues, and understanding of the science involved, and the ability to understand more than one side of the issue.
REQUIREMENTS: Students are required to read from books, journals, and on-line sources. Students will write a research paper, participate in a panel discussion and take part in a group oral presentation.
