ACOUSTICS LAB
CLASS CODE: PH 167L CREDITS:  1
DIVISION: PHYSICAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT: PHYSICS
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Physical Science requirement.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This lab addresses basic measurements, vibrations, wave properties, perception and measurement, room properties. Emphasis is placed on the experience, reasoning, and observations that support understanding in the course.
Must be taken concurrently with PH 167.
DESCRIPTION: This lab addresses basic measurements, vibrations, wave properties, perception and measurement, room properties. Emphasis is placed on the experience, reasoning, and observations that support understanding in the course.
Must be taken concurrently with PH 167.
TOPICS: Basic measurement tools and procedures, significant digits and precision. Properties of vibrating systems. Measuring vibrations and waves. Wave properties: wave lengths, wave speeds, wave frequencies, reflection and boundary conditions, standing waves in springs and air columns. Simple and complex wave forms, spectra and Fourier analysis, wave synthesis. If time and student interest allow, some topics may be selected from : Musical intervals, Perception and measurement, and Room properties.
OBJECTIVES: Emphasis is placed on the experience, reasoning, and observations that support understanding in the course. Ph 167L gives students a chance to perform observations of actual phenomena. It gives them the opportunity to make the detailed reasoning needed to generalize their results. Ph 167L gives depth and meaning to their discussion in Ph 167 by relating the concepts to real experience. Students will develop their observation and critical reasoning skills by being individually and directly responsible to their observations in small-group checkouts.
REQUIREMENTS: Concurrent or previous registration in Ph 167. Lab assignments and reports will be required. Some faculty may require regular preparation assignments, quizzes, or synthesis summaries. Because the course requires the lab to accompany it, exam questions in the course may address concepts that are revisited in the lab.
