DESCRIPTION: The laboratory is designed to provide students with experience making and analyzing measurements at an introductory-level in the Physical Sciences : Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology, Meteorology, and Physics.
TOPICS: Measurements and instruments, relationships and graphing, scalars and vectors, mass-volume-density, elasticity and oscillations, waves and sound, convex lens and images, atomic spectra, Ohmís Law, series and parallel circuits, cost of electricity, seismology, rocks and minerals, photogeology, absolute and relative humidity, chemistry, astronomical magnitude scale.
OBJECTIVES: PHS 100L introduces students to the Scientific Method. Students will be able to describe how and why observations and measurements are used to support and falsify theories, laws, and principles in the Physical Sciences. Students will be able to explain the limitations of the measurement process and modeling.
REQUIREMENTS: PHS100L must be taken concurrently with PHS 100 (Physical Science). All students must have their own laboratory manual. Scientific calculators (graphing-calculators are not required) will be utilized and the student must procure their own. Laboratory procedures, assignments, examinations are required by all faculty. Some faculty may in addition require attendance, participation, projects, group-working, or other forms of assessment.
PREREQUISITES: Concurrent Registration: PHS 100
