CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Acquisition of the four basic language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing with the Cyrillic alphabet. Designed for beginners and students with less than two years of high school Russian.
DESCRIPTION: This course will focus on introducing the Russian language to the complete beginner. Focus in class will be placed on speaking and listening as well as basic grammar concepts. Homework will be mostly geared to practicing the concepts covered in class through reading and writing assignments as well as listening from a prepared CD.
TOPICS: Basic speaking, listening, writing, reading skills and knowledge of the grammar to enable the student to communicate comprehensibly about the themes chosen for the semester.
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1) Speak and understand at a novice-mid level about certain basic themes such as family, greeting and meeting people, home, etc; 2) Write a short, half-page essay about these themes using the Cyrillic alphabet; and 3) Read basic texts about these themes and skim newspaper ads, etc.
REQUIREMENTS: Attendance, written homework (using textbook and workbook), listening homework (using CD and tapes), quizzes, tests, and final exam.
