CATALOG DESCRIPTION: A survey of nineteenth and twentieth century Russian literature from Pushkin to Solzhenitsyn. All readings, assignments, and instruction in English.
DESCRIPTION: This course will give the student a basic overview of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries and the authors who wrote it. Novels, novellas, short stories, poetry, and plays will all be examined. Special emphasis will be given to common themes found throughout Russian literature as well as to the connection between Russian literature and the Russian soul. The biographies of the main authors will also be discussed.
TOPICS: Russian literature and its common themes and movements, Russian culture, biographies of main Russian authors, and the connection between Russian literature and character.
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semster, students will be able to: 1)More fully understand the origins, movements, and main themes in Russian literature; 2)More fully understand the biographies of the main Russian authors; and 3)More fully appreciate the Russian people through their literature; and 4)More fully appreciate the great contribution Russian literature has made to world literature.
REQUIREMENTS: Attendance, reading homework, quizzes, papers, midterm and final exam.
PREREQUISITES: English 111 with a grade of "C" or better or consent of instructor.
