CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course is to prepare students to safely hitch and drive a variety of horse drawn vehicles with draft animals for work or recreational purposes.
DESCRIPTION: With the continued popularity of using draft animals on working ranches, recreational resorts and for private use this course will prepare students for future employment and personal enjoyment. Students will learn about draft animals, harnesses, hitching horse drawn vehicles and the principles of driving techniques.
TOPICS: Horses, anatomy and the fundamentals of horse care, harnesses, horsedrawn vehicles, hitch and rigging gear, principles of driving, driving safety, multiple hitches, breaking and training draft animals.
OBJECTIVES: Have graduates prepared to utilize draft horses in a variety of different settings with sound working knowledge in the following areas: a) The dynamics of draft, b) horses, anatomy, and the fundamentals of care, c) feeding the work horse, d) harness and harnessing, e) hitch gear, f) principles of driving for work, g) rigging the hitch, h) hitching up, i) cost of using horses, j) value of horses as power, k) work you can do with horses.
