|CATALOG DESCRIPTION:||Materials design, installation, and applications of building electrical systems, including electrical theory, design of circuits; electrical heat, light and power installation; National Electrical Code.|
|DESCRIPTION:||Study of materials, design of circuits and inspection for electrical heat, light and power installation in homes and small buildings. The class covers the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable local codes. The course applies the NEC as a standard for the layout and installation of residential electrical systems. Basic electrical theory will be presented and applications and basic wiring skills will be introduced.|

|OBJECTIVES:||Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to describe, perform safely, or identify the following:
1. Define volts, amps, watts(volt amperes), resistance, etc.
2. Basic electrical laws and formulas: Ohms law, series and parallel circuits, etc.
3. Electrical symbols: code requirements, placement, etc.
4. Wiring of switches: single pole, 3-way, 4-way
5. Wiring of outlets: GFCI, duplex, split, etc.
6. Calculation of lighting, appliance and heating circuits and loads, breaker or fuse size, service entrance loads and size.
7. Types and requirements of service entrances
8. Code requirements for grounding
9. Sizing of conductors for service entrance and branch circuits
10. Insulation and sheathing types and applications
11. Electrical raceways, boxes, and their restrictions and applications
|REQUIREMENTS:||Course Policies: Students are expected to attend all classroom and lab sessions. More than two unexcused absences or tardies may result in a full letter grade drop in the final grade. When possible inform the instructor in advance of possible absences.
Reading assignments from the text and class assignments will be given and students will be expected to complete them and participate in class discussions. Lab work will be done in groups and you will be graded on neatness and completeness as well as participation in the group.
It is expected that each student will abide the Ricks College dress, grooming, and honor standards. Feel free to consult with the instructor at anytime you have difficulty or become confused. Office hours are posted and/or by appointment.
Evaluation: In evaluation of each students performance and mastery of assignments and course work, the following criteria will be used for student evaluation.
A. Attendance: The college attendance policy is in force. Regular attendance and punctuality will influence the final grade and the level of achievement. Five points per unexcused absence and two pts. per tardy will be deducted from a possible 100 points.
B. Assignments: It is your responsibility to do your own work and deliver your assignments on time. No late assignments will be accepted. Study the assignment sheet and follow it closely.
C. Quizzes, Tests, and Final: There are weekly quizzes and a final test evaluating the student's progress in the course. Quizzes will be given unannounced (plan on one each week). There will be no make-up quizzes. You must be in class to take the quiz. The final will be a comprehensive objective test. All testing times are posted in your Assignment Sheet. Test questions will be very similar to questions at the end of each chapter and quiz questions.
D. Grading: Assignments will be given a point value based on complexity and time involved. All points for assignments, special projects, quizzes, tests, and examinations will be totaled individually and given a percentage and weight.
E. Weighting of Assignments and Tests:
(a) chapter questions 25%
(b) chapter quizzes 20%
(c) final exam 15%
(d) assignments 20%
(e) technology report 10%
(f) wiring labs 10%
Assignments: Some assignments will be done as groups and you will be graded according to participation and involvement with the group. Each member of the group will have individual responsibilities that will influence the grade of the entire group. Please recognize the value of this experience as it relates to real life situations and help each other to be successful within your group.
All assignments are to be turned in on the date specified. No late work will be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor or there are extenuating circumstances such as a family emergency or death.
Homework assignments will be regularly scheduled. If you plan on selling your text you should write the question and answer on a separate sheet for easy review for the final. Drawings should be neat and clear.
TECHNICAL REPORT: This report is to encourage research on a special topic related to the construction industry (preferably with some connection to electricity or wiring). The report is to be in written form and presented orally in class. The report should be 3 - 5 typewritten pages. A proposal for the report will be submitted early in the semester and approved by the instructor.
|OTHER:||There will be occasional visits (possibly unannounced) to construction sites as they reach construction phases that correspond to lecture content. Please come dressed to face the Rexburg weather at any time. There will be some time spent in the lab, for which you need to dress appropriately.
It is the studentís responsibility to disclose to the teacher any special needs and/or learning disabilities he/she may have before the first week of class is over so that accommodations may be made.
