CATALOG DESCRIPTION: History of American journalism; orientation to print journalism careers; information-gathering strategies and techniques, including human source, library, database and Internet searching; proper use of varied source and data information; interviewing and reporting techniques.
DESCRIPTION: This course teaches the basics of research for reporters and marketers.
TOPICS: Marketing Research.
Math basics for communication majors.
Interviewing.
Computer-assisted reporting.
Web-based research.
Library Research.
Computers and technology in research.
Understanding data.
OBJECTIVES: Improve students' ability to come up with useful news stories.
Help students use new technology more effectively to research.
Help students learn how to do marketing research.
Help students learn the basics of spreadsheets and databases for computer-assisted reporting.
REQUIREMENTS: Two exams.
Regular in-class assignments.
Five projects on computers, marketing, reporting, using the internet.
PREREQUISITES: COMM 111; or Business Comm(B 220); or a 300-level English writing class.
OTHER: Computer supplies fee: $5
