Machine and Tool Layout Fundamentals
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Introduction to presentation drawings; belt, gears, and cams; sheet metal layout; structure steel, electrical and electronics layout; jigs and fixtures; tool design drawings. All design work is done with 3D Parametric CAD tools.
DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to instruct product design and manufacturing skills using Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing tools to the student. Emphasis is placed on industrial quality production drawings in a wide variety of areas using 3D CAD design tools. Engineering graphics, precision dimensioning and tolerancing with applications; working drawings (detail and assembly); introduction to belts, gears, and cams; sheet metal drawings; piping and structural steel drawings, electrical and architectural drawings will be instructed during the course. All design and drawing work will be done using 3D CAD tools. Paying attention to detail will be stressed.
TOPICS: Working drawings (detailed and assembly), introduction to belts, gears, and cams, sheet metal drawings, structural steel, electrical manufacturing tooling, presentation quality output. Emphasis on industrial quality output will be stressed.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to do the following:

- Demonstrate advanced skills necessary to design and produce industrial quality production drawings in a variety of fields.

- Make quality design sketches and layouts.

- Understand how different types of design drafting problems can be solved using the tools and experience gained thus far in the students’ education.

- Apply 3D Computer-Aided Design software to generate a solution to any given design problem.

Each computer lab is locked with a combination lock. Each student will be given the combination at the beginning of the semester. The combination is not to be given to anyone else. This is to avoid any problems with unauthorized persons gaining entry to the labs. The lab doors should be kept closed to protect the computers from dust, etc. Additionally, outside noise can be quite distracting. Papers should be cleaned up after each lab session. NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE COMPUTER LABS!!! PERIOD!! Computer labs are intended to be quiet areas. Radios and recorders are not allowed to be used during class or lab periods. Each student should take care of the department software and equipment. NO software is to be copied or removed from the computers or labs.

The Brigham Young University - Idaho Honor Code and dress standards will be strictly enforced. Please refrain from wearing inappropriate clothing, jewelry, or hats during class and labs.


There will be three (3) lecture periods each week. Each student is required to be in attendance during the scheduled course periods. It is required that each student schedule time on their own to work on the assignments as class periods are not to be used for working on the assignments. Unannounced quizzes may be randomly given as is deemed necessary by the instructor. NO makeup will be allowed on quizzes unless previous notification of the student being absent is made to the instructor. NO EXCEPTIONS.


Assignments are as per the attached schedule. Each group of assignment problems will be handed out at the beginning of class at the first of the week. They are DUE IN 2 WEEKS at the beginning of class, unless otherwise noted by the instructor. Assigned drawings and projects turned in after the due date will receive a 10-point reduction in the score for each week they are late.

The basic graded weight of each assignment is indicated on the assignment schedule. The course also has a design project that will carry a weight of 50 points.

There will be a practical mid-term and final exam. They will be given during normal class periods in the week indicated on the assignment schedule (unless otherwise noted).

Grading will be done according to the standard Brigham Young University - Idaho format. The final grade for the course will be a comparison of the point total accumulated by the student against the total points available for the term. Extra credit assignments are available if the student would like to attempt them (AFTER SCHEDULED ASSIGNMENTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED). The point values for these extra credit assignments are not the full value of a normal assignment.
All design work to be done on 3D CAD tools.

Diskettes: 1 - 100 MG Zip Disk. This disk will be used to draw to and backup your drawings.

Paper: A supply of plotting vellum “A” and “B” size
