Critical theories, including historical, psychoanalytical, archetypal, deconstructionist, reader-response, multicultural, Marxist, feminist, New Criticism, and others; impact of theory on reading, interpretation, and canon formation; application of critical theory to literary texts. |
| OBJECTIVES: |
- Read primary texts representing significant literary theories.
- Explore one literary theory in depth (students' personal choice).
- Read works illustrating the application of literary theory.
- Learn about the proponents of significant literary theories and their methods of discourse.
- Apply a representative literary theory to a text.

| REQUIREMENTS: |
Readings, oral presentations, and analytical papers to improve critical thinking and interpretive skills, and increase knowledge of interpretive and literary theories. Requires 20 pages of edited prose. MLA documentation. |

Completion of English 251. |
