DESCRIPTION: Examines a variety of sacred and religious texts, explores connections between literature and religious ideals, and provides an interpretive framework.
TOPICS: Exposure to a range of sacred and religious literature; examination of the way literature explores, dramatizes, and promotes sacred and religious ideals; literary principles for reading sacred and religious texts closely to gain insight into religious thought; critical thinking about sacred/religious texts; theme identification within the literary tradition.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand and appreciate literature as a valuable source of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic experience reflecting and enriching the human experience.
  2. Read literature within such contexts as nationality, historical period, ethnicity, and culture.
  3. Apply appropriate critical theories to literary texts.
  4. Continue developing library skills for literary research and document formal writing according to MLA guidelines.
  5. Integrate secondary texts into written work.
REQUIREMENTS: Extensive reading, discussion, and oral presentations. Interpretive and analytical papers totaling 15 pages. MLA documentation.
