CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Focuses on the creation of original works of poetry, drama, fiction and non-fiction. Introductory course for the creative writing emphasis for English majors. (Does not give GE credit in the Letters area of the Arts & Letters requirement nor in the Reading & Writing area of the Basic Skills requirement.)

TOPICS: Basic forms of creative literature; class-based writing workshops; literary terms; basic expectations of the creative publishing market.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Read quality literature for example and inspiration.
  2. Produce works in several genres--poetry, fiction, and drama.
  3. Understand differences between popular and literary writing.
  4. Learn basic terminology in several genres.
  5. Improve editing skills: grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
  6. Develop an understanding of one's own writing approach and temperament.
  7. Regularly experience peer critiques and workshops.
  8. Produce a portfolio of one's best work.
REQUIREMENTS: Reading assignments from the works of published authors. Numerous writing assignments. Class-based workshop assignments.
PREREQUISITES: Completion of English 111 or 111C.
