CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Focuses on workshops, document production, portfolio preparation, and editing. Prepares students for creative publishing. (Culminating class for English Majors/Creative Writing Emphasis.)
DESCRIPTION: Focuses on workshops, document production, portfolio preparation, and editing. Prepares students for creative publishing. (Culminating class for English Majors/Creative Writing Emphasis.)
TOPICS: Standards and methods of creative writing workshops; professional documentation; creative writing publications and markets; editing and production of a literary magazine.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Learn about the contemporary creative writing market.
  2. Create professional quality queries, submission letters, and proposals.
  3. Submit work to a national publication.
  4. Explore graduate creative writing education opportunities.
  5. Facilitate the publication of Outlet: The BYU-Idaho Student Literary Journal.
  6. Organize and participate in peer writing groups.
    <1i>Give public readings of one's best work.
    <1i>Refine one's personal aesthetic and the understanding of one's writing temperament.
REQUIREMENTS: Write and revise poems, stories, essays, and dramatic scenes, workshopping them with peers and the teacher. Create professional documents. Submit an original creative piece to a professional journal or magazine. Produce a portfolio representing a body of creative work produced at BYU-Idaho. Serve on the student editorial board of Outlet.
PREREQUISITES: English 218 or 318R.
