CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Focuses on the improvement of English skills for non-native speakers. Emphasizes oral communication.
DESCRIPTION: English 108A is designed to help international students improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills and also to help them adjust to American and "BYU-Idaho" life. Students will meet in class three times a week, and with an American partner twice a week. The class environment is non-threatening. Students will have the opportunity to improve their English by using it in authentic situations, not simply by rote memorization and reproduction.
TOPICS: Listening; cross-cultural communication; vocabulary; grammar; and basic reading and writing skills in English.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Develop oral language skills.
  2. Become acculturated.
  3. Develop reading skills.
  4. Develop writing skills.
REQUIREMENTS: Percent of grade: Class discussion participation
= 15%; assigned homework/classwork = 15%; three oral presentations = 30% 2 hours/week in the Reading Lab= 10%; five 1-2 page papers = 10%; tests and quizzes = 5%
video listening practice = 5%; vocabulary lists = 10%:
