TOPICS: Daily journal writing; formal writing assignments; grammar practice; weekly meetings with a conversation partner (tutor) in the Reading Lab.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Practice the writing process by prewriting, drafting, rewriting, and editing papers.
  2. Improve basic skills of standard English through group and individual instruction.
  3. Improve English "thinking" skills by listening, speaking, reading, and writing in authentic situations.
  4. Help students make a smooth transition to a new culture by discussing the "expectations" of American writing teachers.
REQUIREMENTS: Percent of grade: Formal writing assignments = 25%; Journal = 15%; Portfolio = 10%; Quizzes = 15%; Reading/homework prep. = 10%; Conversation partner (tutor) work = 10%; Mid- Term and Final = 15%. Total = 100%.
PREREQUISITES: International student whose primary language is not English.
