CATALOG DESCRIPTION: French teaching skills and theories of foreign language acquisition.
DESCRIPTION: Emphasizes teaching methods for future high school teachers. Foreign language in elementary schools also included. Information on language acquisition theory and foreign language teaching profession also presented.
TOPICS: Proficiency-based approaches to speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Historical overview of the profession, overview of diverse methologies, teaching culture, testing, language acquisition theories, professional organizations, foreign language standards, ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, foreign language instruction in the elementary schools, specific techniques for teaching particular syntactical domains, etc.
OBJECTIVES: Students will become equipped with the tools necessary to function as effective instructors of foreign language and to assist them in moving their future students to higher levels of proficiency. They will be familiar with specific foreign language teaching techniques as well as have a very basic knowledge of language acquisition theory. They will gain an understanding of some of the more salient current issues in the profession.
REQUIREMENTS: Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skills by formal examinations, assignments, and classroom activities where they will demonstrate that they can perform the various techniques. Readings will be required for every class period backed up by a quiz every day. An attendance policy will be enforced.
PREREQUISITES: French 321 with a grade of C or better. French Teaching minors must have completed or be near completing 20 credit hours in a foreign language.
