CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Emphasizes writing proficiency by focusing on the writing process, collaborative writing, and techniques for teaching writing in elementary school. (Required for Elementary Education majors.)

TOPICS: Effective writing processes; rhetorical modes; academic research writing; writing to get a job; strategies for teaching writing to elementary-age students; writing teacher reports.
OBJECTIVES:

  1. Relate writing strategies to other subject areas and to real-life situations.
  2. Apply advanced writing skills and research techniques to produce effective professional documents for various academic disciplines and anticipated careers.
  3. Generate and apply knowledge according to the methods of inquiry and standards of evidence used in the discipline.
  4. Develop and demonstrate skills in logic, analysis, and critical thinking.
  5. Evaluate research sources for their accuracy, comprehensiveness, and usefulness.
  6. Accurately interpret, summarize, and integrate information from traditional and electronic sources into an original document.
  7. Design a document using appropriate format, page layout, and visuals.
  8. Apply elements of effective writings, such as adapting to audience and purpose; focusing, organizing and developing ideas; achieving coherence; and editing.
REQUIREMENTS: 30 pages of edited and documented prose.
PREREQUISITES: Elementary Education major, English 111 or 111C, and at least 22 credit hours or sophomore standing.
