CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of rock deformation and rock structures. Introduction to tectonics. Field Trips. Only taught in the summer.
DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the principles of mineral & rock deformation and the identification, measurement, analysis, and interpretation of structures accross all scales--thin section, hand sample, and field. Students are also introduced to global tectonics.

2. Mechanisms for Mechanical Deformation of Minerals & Rocks
3. Formation and Identification of Brittle & Ductile Structures
4. Measurement, Analysis, & Interpretation of Structural Data
5. Global Tectonics
6. Geophysical Methods in Structural Geology
OBJECTIVES: 1. Help students to be able to identify structures and understand how they form
2. Introduce students to the measurement, analysis, and interpretation of structural data
3. Introduce students to the general concepts of global tectonics
4. Further student field skills
REQUIREMENTS: This class requires significant preparation for and participation in class. Field trips are also required.
PREREQUISITES: Geol 111 & 112, Geol 350; Phys 105, 121, or 221
