CATALOG DESCRIPTION: An intensive introduction to biology, including cell structure and function, basic metabolic pathways, and genetics. (Winter, Summer, Fall)
DESCRIPTION: This is a rigorous introductory course for biology majors and those seeking entrance into professional school. The course provides in depth exposure to many of the key topics in biology, providing the student with the foundation necessary for success in the upper division biology classes. The accompanying lab will introduce students to the use of scientific instruments, provide opportunities to practice critical thinking as they evaluate the results of their experiments, and provide experience in scientific writing.
TOPICS: Basic chemistry, cell biology, cellular metabolism, classical genetics, molecular genetics, and evolution. Topics covered in lab include macromolecules, enzyme kinetics, diffusion, mitosis, genetics, molecular biology and bioethics.
OBJECTIVES: Provide students with an in depth background in basic biological principles, preparing them for advanced biology classes.
REQUIREMENTS: Grade is based on performance on 7 unit exams, lab reports and a lab midterm and a final.
PREREQUISITES: Previous credit in Chem 105 or equivalent
