GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Reading & Writing requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Focuses on the development of proficient college writing. Emphasizes the composing process, expository and argumentative discourse, research and documentation.
TAUGHT: Winter, Summer, and Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: The writing process; rhetorical aims and strategies; audience awareness; research and documentation; style; and editing.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize the interconnectedness of writing, other disciplines, and life.
  2. Apply elements of effective writing, such as adapting to audience and purpose; focusing, organizing, and developing ideas; achieving coherence; and editing.
  3. Practice writing as a recursive process: prewriting, drafting, responding, revising, and editing.
  4. Accurately paraphrase, summarize, and respond to college level reading.
  5. Write a research paper accurately integrating information from traditional, technical, and electronic sources, and documenting them correctly using MLA guidelines.
  6. Approach, in both reading and writing, rhetorical modes including narration, description, process, classification, comparison, causal analysis, and definition.
  7. Write essays representing principal rhetorical aims: reflective, informative, and persuasive.
REQUIREMENTS: 20 pages of edited prose.
