DESCRIPTION: Analysis of audience, development of style and additional instruction in journalistic modes of writing with an aim toward sharpening writing ability and technique beyond basic skills taught in COMM 111.

CONTENT AND TOPICS: Analysis of audience, development of style and additional instruction in journalistic modes of writing with an aim toward sharpening writing ability and technique beyond basic skills taught in COMM 111.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Improve lead/news writing skills. Demonstrate effective use of tone, attributive verbs, quotes, succinctness, color and usage in writing. Compare/contrast news, newspaper feature, magazine, editorial and columns as journalistic genres. Write articles worthy of publication in each of the above journalistic genres. Interview effectively. Demonstrate a dedication to accuracy through reporting and research.
REQUIREMENTS: Tests, evaluations, writing evaluations, readings, lectures, modeling, interview practice, peer input, writing feedback, library tour and library research work.
