DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of computer data communications and interfacing focusing on the physical and data link layers of the OSI architecture. Includes analog and digital data signaling, guided and wireless signal transmission, signal encoding techniques, error detection and correction, and flow control.

CONTENT AND TOPICS: Overview of computer data communications and networking, analog and digital data transmission, guided and wireless signal transmission, signal encoding techniques, error detection and correction, flow control, multiplexing and spread spectrum.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Basic principles of data communications and computer interfacing
2. The benefits and issues of signal transmission over different types of media
3. Signal encoding techniques of digital/analog data and digital/analog signals
4. Ways to detect and correct errors in the transmission of data
5. Methods of flow control and issues related to these methods
6. Various types of multiplexing
