Statics and Strength of Materials
GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Application of the principles of statics to machine design and structural engineering problems. (Primarily for technology students and architecture and construction management majors.)
TAUGHT: Fall, Winter
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Forces, moments and couples. Static equilibrium of force systems. Free body diagrams. Friction. Elementary strength of materials. Stress, strain, torsion, shear, bending moment. Stresses and deflections in beams. Pressure vessels. Stress concentrations. Equations of elasticity. Combined loading. Mohr's circle. Columns.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The student will:
1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
2. Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.
3. Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
4. Communicate effectively.
5. Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
REQUIREMENTS: 1. EXAMS: Eight exams will be given during the semester. These tests will cover material presented in class since the previous test and will consist of analytical questions very much like the homework problems. Some questions will be designed to stretch your thinking a little beyond the homework but will still be based on the principles covered in class. In grading the exams credit will be given for demonstrating clear, logical and sound thinking specifically to application of principles covered in this course. The top seven exam scores will be used in figuring final grades. The exam scores count for 80% of the overall grade.

2. HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will be given in class and count for 20% of the overall grade. Do the homework. If you are confident with the homework, you will be able to show your competency in the exams. Homework scores may be determined by demonstrating ability to correctly work out previously assigned homework on short in class quizzes.

3. Passing grades of A, B, C, and D will be earned by minimum averages of 90%, 80%, 70%, and 60%, respectively.
PREREQUISITES: Math 111 or equivalent; consent of instructor
OTHER: Read the assigned material before coming to class. Reading assignments are given for each class period, per this syllabus. Ask questions in class. There is no such thing as a "dumb question." If a concept is unclear to you, it is probably unclear to others as well. Do not hesitate to ask questions: either in or out of class. We are here to master this material and to succeed!! Take pride in your work. The time to develop productive professional work habits is now! Consult with the course instructor before you become disappointed, distraught, downcast and confused. Five minutes spent at the right time will save much difficulty the night before the test.
