GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Physical Science requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Mineral and rock identification and interpretation, as well as, map and photo interpretation. Students who take Geology 111 lab may not receive credit for Geology 102.
TAUGHT: Winter, Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: The Physical Geology Lab is taught in conjuction with the lecture class, providing students with a "hands-on" experience. In addition to learning how to identify and interpret rocks and minerals, the students also complete exercises working with maps, air-photos, and electronic data sets (GIS).
1. Rock-forming and common ore mineral identification
2. Identification & interpretation of igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks
3. Working with topographic maps
4. Using topographic maps, geologic maps, and air photos to understand different geologic processes (stream, ground water resources, mass wasting, structural features).
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: This class is designed to support and augment concepts taught in Physical Geology 111. It is recommended for majors in Geology and Earth Science Education and anyone pursuing a vocation in a related field. Geology 111L lab is where hands on applications and individual observations take place, bringing greater depth in understanding the concepts taught in Physical Geology lecture materials.
REQUIREMENTS: Attendance on all field trips.
PREREQUISITES: Concurrent enrollment in Geol 111 or instructors' consent.
