GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Tutor training to meet student needs and national certification. Training in establishing rapport, assessing needs, teaching study habits, the art of questioning, helping students accept responsibility.
TAUGHT:
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Setting Expectations, The Art of Questioning, Critical Thinking Skills, Modeling Problem Solving, Structuring the Learning Experience, Motivation Techniques, Study Skills, Collaborative Learning, Learning Strategies.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Establishing a series of tutoring certificates. Allows tutors to receive recognition and positive reinforcement for their successful work from an international organization, CRLA. Sets up a standard for the minimum skills and training a tutor needs in order to be successful.
REQUIREMENTS: Each tutor must complete all of the following:(1) Attend all tutor-training classes.(2) Read “The ABC’s of Tutoring” and turn in the accompanying worksheet.(3) Complete the Study Skills Worksheet in the Study Skills Lab.(4) Attend scheduled interviews with instructor.(5) Complete Tutor Self-Assessment Sheet.(6) Have four of your students complete a Tutor Evaluation form.(7) Write a case study for one of your students by following the Case Study Guide.(8) Keep a journal with notes explaining what was covered in class each week and how you will apply the concept/concepts to tutoring in general or a specific student.(9) Tutor a minimum of 25 hours.
PREREQUISITES: Education majors only; Requires at least 15 completed credit hours and the consent of the instructor.
OTHER: The course encompasses fifteen one-hour tutor-training classes that meet once a week for the duration of the semester.
