| CONTENT AND TOPICS: |
Aesthetics; literary theories including new criticism, myth, reader-response, deconstructionism, psychoanalytic criticism, and feminist criticism; genres and forms; and terminology describing literature. |
| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: |
- Appreciate literary texts as sources of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic experiences.
- Understand how culture, ethnicity, and values influence literature.
- Explore critical theories that inform the ways experienced readers respond to literature, particularly Formalism, New Historicism, Multiculturalism, Feminism, Psychological Criticism, and Reader Response.
- Develop critical reading skills to analyze fiction, poetry, and drama.
- Understand the conventions of literature.
- Apply the critical vocabulary describing literature.
- Analyze the relationship between formal structure and theme.
- Use textual evidence to support literary interpretations.
- Develop skills for literary research and present information accurately.
- Document formal writing according to MLA guidelines.
