Fundamentals of Literary Interpretation

GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Letters requirement.
DESCRIPTION: Introduces literary genre: fiction, poetry, drama, and literary theory. (Required for English majors and minors.)
TAUGHT: Winter, Summer, and Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Aesthetics; literary theories including new criticism, myth, reader-response, deconstructionism, psychoanalytic criticism, and feminist criticism; genres and forms; and terminology describing literature.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Appreciate literary texts as sources of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic experiences.
  2. Understand how culture, ethnicity, and values influence literature.
  3. Explore critical theories that inform the ways experienced readers respond to literature, particularly Formalism, New Historicism, Multiculturalism, Feminism, Psychological Criticism, and Reader Response.
  4. Develop critical reading skills to analyze fiction, poetry, and drama.
  5. Understand the conventions of literature.
  6. Apply the critical vocabulary describing literature.
  7. Analyze the relationship between formal structure and theme.
  8. Use textual evidence to support literary interpretations.
  9. Develop skills for literary research and present information accurately.
  10. Document formal writing according to MLA guidelines.
REQUIREMENTS: 20 pages of critical writing.
PREREQUISITES: Completion of English 111 or 111C. English and Humanities majors and minors.
