Advanced Writing for Business

GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Reading & Writing requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Emphasizes rhetorical strategies, patterns, and aims characteristic of professional business writing with a focus on purpose and audience. (Required for Business majors.)
TAUGHT: Winter, Summer, and Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Professional business writing modes and practices, such as correspondence, proposals, summaries, job-search materials, business plans, promotional literature, research reports; critical thinking skills to successfully synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information within business fields; strategies for research and documentation specific to business; professional prose style; collaborative learning and teamwork in a professional environment.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Relate writing strategies to other subject areas and to real-life situations.
  2. Apply advanced writing skills and research techniques to produce effective professional documents for various academic disciplines and anticipated careers.
  3. Generate and apply knowledge according to the methods of inquiry and standards of evidence used in the discipline.
  4. Develop and demonstrate skills in logic, analysis, and critical thinking.
  5. Evaluate research sources for their accuracy, comprehensiveness, and usefulness.
  6. Accurately interpret, summarize, and integrate information from traditional and electronic sources into an original document.
  7. Design a document using appropriate format, page layout, and visuals.
  8. Apply elements of effective writings, such as adapting to audience and purpose; focusing, organizing and developing ideas; achieving coherence; and editing.
REQUIREMENTS: 30 pages of edited and documented prose.
PREREQUISITES: Completion of English 111 or 111C or Business 220, and at least 22 credit hours or sophomore standing.
