GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Letters requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Emphasizes extensive reading, writing, and study of non-fiction works by major authors. Includes genre such as history, philosophy, speeches, journals, reviews, columns, letters.
TAUGHT: On demand.
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Analyzing, critiquing, appreciating and enjoying non-fiction writing.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand and appreciate literature as a valuable source of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic experience reflecting and enriching the human experience.
  2. Read literature within such contexts as nationality, historical period, ethnicity, and culture.
  3. Apply appropriate critical theories to literary texts.
  4. Continue developing library skills for literary research and document formal writing according to MLA guidelines.
  5. Integrate secondary texts into written work.
REQUIREMENTS: Extensive reading, discussion, and oral presentations. Interpretive and analytical papers, and creative/imitative writing using the form studied within the genre totaling 15 pages. MLA documentation.
