DESCRIPTION: This is a broad survey course covering Discovery, Colonization, War for Independence, the Constitution, Foreign Affairs, Westward Expansion, Sectionalism and the Civil War.

CONTENT AND TOPICS: Topics covered will include (but will not be limited to) Native Americans, European discovery, Colonization, War for Independence, Constitutional Development, Foreign Affairs, Westward Expansion, Sectionalism, and the Civil War.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The course serves as a general introduction to the scholarly study of the American experience. It is designed to provide students an understanding of the basic facts and general themes in American history, clarify perceptions of the past, and introduce important interpretive debates. The course will also encourage students to practice effective writing skills and expose them to the historical process of analytical research and writing.
