DESCRIPTION: Survey in English of 19th and 20th Century Russian Literature: Pushkin to Solshenitsyn
TAUGHT: Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Russian literature and its common themes and movements, Russian culture, biographies of main Russian authors, and the connection between Russian literature and character.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: -Develop the ability to analyze and appreciate Russian literary texts in translation.
-Be able to express thoughts more articulately and persuasively in English, and to present ideas logically, with sound argumentation and strong evidence.
-Enhance appreciation of Russian culture by examining how Russia's major authors have treated cultural issues in their most famous works.
REQUIREMENTS: Lecture, discussion, cooperative learning, independent research, literary analysis, written tasks, peer review, mid-term exam, final exam.
PREREQUISITES: English 111 with a grade of "C" or better, or consent of instructor.
