|DESCRIPTION:||Methods of effective teaching for secondary education majors.|
|CONTENT AND TOPICS:||Topics include media, exams and assessments, reading, projects, simulations, group activities, using oral and written reports, classroom management, communication skills, planning, professional commitment and responsibility.|
|GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:||Show proficiency in presenting the basic facts, concepts, assumptions, and theories in the social studies disciplines.
Present information that is accurate, relevant, and current.
Identify the major teaching styles used effectively in the social studies classroom, including direct instruction, and discussion.
Identify the major elements of a good lesson plan for the social studies, including the WHATS, the HOWS, and the IFS.
Identify the relationship of social studies to other disciplines and develop the proper attitudes to instill citizenship-based values in public school students.
Execute lesson plans in actual teaching settings and demonstrate proficiency in using the various teaching methods appropriate to the social studies.
Demonstrate proficiency in using the various technologies available to effectively teach social studies concepts.
Demonstrate proficiency in providing a nurturing, safe environment for learning, including and understanding of diverse student needs, cultures, and learning styles.
